San Simeon Receives Training Grant
Our facility has received a grant from the 1199 SEIU Training and Upgrading Fund and Greater New York Education Fund. The funding is sponsored through the Training In Long Term Care Health Care Reform Act (HCRA) for Gerontology Skills Training Programs and Emergency Management Programs. San Simeon is the only nursing facility in Eastern Suffolk to receive this grant, which will enhance its already skilled staff in behavioral interventions and clinical gerontology work.
San Simeon was one of seven facilities on Long Island (out of 13) that applied for the grant and received funding. Of the total $148,000 project funding, San Simeon received $14,000 for four nurses and ten Certified Nursing Assistants to receive training in end of life issues, pain management, incontinence and in-dwelling catheters. The training is being held this fall.
The Gerontology Skills Training Program focuses on building concepts of person-centered care to apply problem solving, communication, team building and conflict resolution to a particular gerontology-based project. Training will also help the professional staff utilize geriatric best practice assessment tools. These tools allow the nursing department staff to better-assess symptoms, provide improved interventions, and offer better general resident care. The following geriatric-related topics will be covered: normal signs of aging, cognitive impairment, pain management, oral health, nutrition and hydration, functional assessment and falls, urinary incontinence, and elder mistreatment. The program is available to all job classifications.
"I am proud of our San Simeon staff for not only seeking out and securing this grant for the benefit of our resident care and safety, but I am also proud of the collaboration between our union members and administrative staff. Our facility's education committee, sponsored through 1199, supports its members to meet the highest possible skill standards," said Ms. Demasi, Executive Director of San Simeon By The Sound. "It is our mission to continually improve our knowledge and skills to enhance the quality of care for our residents and for the community. Coupled with 1199's dedication to its members’ education, our organizations bring together staff to form a cohesive care team that has existed for 27 years.
San Simeon is proud of our strong reputation for the highest level of respect and care for people of the North Fork serving individuals from every walk of life. To live our commitment to the community we are constantly looking for ways to build on our strengths and skills, and we are all very proud of the depth of commitment our staff has for our residents."
