Annual Summer Party Benefit Honors and Exhibits North Fork Art

On a warm Sunday evening (8/16) at Belvedere, the Victorian home and gardens of Lee and Marie Beninati in Peconic (NY), several hundred friends and patrons of San Simeon by the Sound Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Greenport (NY) gathered for the Center's annual Summer Party benefit. A central feature of the event was the presentation of a plaque honoring artists Ilya and Emilia Kabakov for their contribution to the Center's renovation project. Said San Simeon Board president Robert Wieczorek, "The generosity of the Kabakovs advances our renovation efforts currently underway, in which we have opened a new West Wing residence, soon to be followed by the creation of a Medical Day Care service."

The $30,000 Kabakov gift was a portion of the Premium Imperial Prize awarded the Kabakovs last year by the Japan Art Association for outstanding work in sculpture. "The Children's Theater," a model of an installation, the art form for which the Kabakov's are internationally renowned, was on exhibit at the Party. The commemorative plaque awarded the Kabakovs was the creation in fused glass art of Orient (NY) sculptor Yan Rieger.

Referring to items in the silent auction fund-raiser, Party committee chairman Helen Levine said, "The convergence of beautiful and precious art with the generocity of the people of the North Fork made this a glorious event. We expect it to grow and prosper as San Simeon expands its health care resources here."

Additional artifacts contributed to the silent aution were a bronze replica of the sculpture John F. Kennedy by Robert Berks, Mmasquerade," bronge sculpture by Peggy Mach, wood carvings by Jack Combs, and prints and paintings by Gary Parker, Rich Fiedler, and Janice Robinson - all North Fork resident artists.
